The result
The A to Z of AI Accounting Software published its October 2026 World Ranking on 15 October. Briefcase placed third of 346 vendors, up from seventh in September. That was the biggest climb in the top ten, and it makes Briefcase the highest-ranked AI accounting software from the UK.

The two places above us went to Digits and Campfire, both from San Francisco. Four of the top ten are from the UK.

How the ranking works
The A to Z of AI Accounting Software is an independent directory of AI accounting and finance software, written and edited by Damon Anderson. Every month it publishes a World Ranking that gives each vendor a single score out of 100.
The score blends five weighted factors:
- AI maturity: how mature and central the AI is to the product
- Workflow coverage: how much of the accounting workflow the product covers
- Evidence: how well its claims are backed up
- Traction: how much real market traction it shows
- Coverage: how deeply it is covered in the report
Products whose AI is a bolt-on rather than core are discounted on the factors that reward size, so an incumbent cannot outrank an AI-native product just by being bigger. The ranking measures capability, not fit: in its own words, it is "a general capability ranking, not a recommendation for your specific business".
AI maturity is scored from 0 to 4. A score of 4, "agentic end-to-end", means whole workflows are delegated to AI agents with human oversight. Briefcase moved from 3 to 4 this month. The full scoring rules are in the methodology.

What moved Briefcase up
Four things changed between the September and October editions.
We launched a ledger
Briefcase Ledger went live on 5 October. It is a full double-entry ledger built for AI from day one, with bank feeds from more than 80 banks, payments, VAT filed straight to HMRC and a built-in month-end close. The launch post covers it in detail.
Autopilot acts instead of suggesting
Autopilot codes, reconciles and posts. Deterministic checks and your own history then decide whether a transaction can go through without a person. When you correct it, it learns from the correction.
Briefcase works with the AI you already use
Our MCP server has 50 read-write tools. Connect Briefcase to Claude or ChatGPT to upload invoices, reconcile the bank or post journals.
Every decision is explained
Every field the AI fills in says why, down to the legislation it read. An accountant or auditor can open a transaction years later and see which documents Autopilot considered before it posted.
“The biggest challenge in covering Briefcase is keeping pace with how quickly it ships.”

Choosing AI accounting software in the UK
A capability ranking tells you who is furthest ahead. It does not tell you which product fits your business. For a UK business or accounting practice, a few questions narrow the field quickly.
- Does it handle UK tax? Look for UK GAAP and Making Tax Digital for VAT. Since April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 also need Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.
- Who is it built for? Some leading products are built for in-house finance teams at growing companies replacing an ERP system. Others are built for small businesses and the accountants who serve them.
- Can you check its work? If AI posts to your books, every decision should come with its reasoning and the evidence behind it.
- Can you move your history? Switching ledgers is only practical if your existing records come with you.
Among the top four, the A to Z lists only US GAAP for Digits. Campfire and Rillet list UK GAAP and MTD for VAT alongside US GAAP, and are aimed at finance teams. Briefcase is the only one of the four that lists MTD for Income Tax, and it is built for UK small businesses, sole traders, landlords and their accountants.
If you keep your books in Xero or QuickBooks and want to stay there, Briefcase Connect brings the same automation to the ledger you already use. For a wider comparison, see our guides to AI bookkeeping software for UK accountants and Xero alternatives.

What a ranking can't tell you
Rankings move every month, and the A to Z is open that no ranking can pick the right product for you on its own. The best test is your own data. Bring a month of transactions and see what Briefcase handles before you review it.
No. 3 is not where we intend to stay.
