This guide will go over how to get started with Briefcase Working Papers.

##

## Permissions

The first step to get started with Working Papers is to set up the correct permissions for users in your organisation. There are 2 permissions for Working Papers:

![wp\_permissons.png](https://kb-assets.briefcase.so/support-kb/uploads/nf6twoxwoxvzxc0mhewjzanz-wp_permissons.png)

- **Edit:** This allows a user to perform any actions within the working paper to prepare it to be closed. This is the traditional "preparer" role.
- **Manage Periods:** This allows a user to create a new working paper and close it once all steps are complete. This is the traditional "approver" role.

An admin can manage these permissions for users by going to the [team settings](https://app.briefcase.so/settings?tab=organization) page.

## Using financial close modules

In order to get the most out of Working Papers, we strongly recommend using our financial close modules. This will help to automate some of your reconciliations every month. To get started using these modules you can follow these guides:

- [Prepayments](https://briefcase.so/articles/how-does-briefcase-handle-prepayments)
- [Deferred Income](https://briefcase.so/articles/how-does-briefcase-handle-deferred-income)
- [Fixed Assets](https://briefcase.so/articles/how-does-briefcase-handle-fixed-assets-depreciation)
- [Accrued Expenses](https://briefcase.so/articles/how-does-briefcase-handle-accrued-expenses)

## Setting up your first working paper

Once you have configured the correct permissions, you are ready to set up your first working paper.

First, select the client which you'd like to open a working paper for in the [dashboard](https://app.briefcase.so/?sections=%7B%22favourites%22%3Atrue%2C%22other%22%3Atrue%7D).

Then click the "Working Papers" tab under "Financial Close" in the sidebar to open the Working Papers page:

Click "Start first close". You will then be prompted to enter a start and end date for your first close. We recommend selecting a monthly or quarterly interval for this:
